UNDERSTAND, NURTURE, AND EMBRACE THIS NEW VERSION OF YOU
Therapy for Perimenopause and Menopause in Evanston, IL
In-person support for women in Chicago’s North Shore
So am I crazy or could this be perimenopause?
You know this behavior isn’t “you” but how can it be because of hormonal changes?
At best, you could say that you haven’t been feeling like yourself. But for many women going through this transition, life is an emotional roller coaster.
One minute you’re fine and the next you’re snapping at a loved one over something objectively minor. Changes in your emotions come intensely and quickly and the consequences on your relationships have you worried. And why is it so hard to remember things or find the right name or word now? You’ve never been like this and sometimes you fear you’re experiencing early cognitive decline. You don’t know how to find the way back to how you used to be or if that’s even possible. Feeling this out of control of yourself can be scary.
Cycling through feelings of guilt, anger (rage?), sadness, isolation, anxiety, overwhelm, and self-doubt along with all the quirky physical symptoms can make this transition seem exhausting and defeating.
Sound like you?
Unpredictable mood changes
Fatigue, sleep issues, mysterious physical ailments
Guilt over how you’ve been treating loved ones
Feeling like you’re a strange, murky version of who you used to be
Here’s what we’ll do together
Therapy can help you remember that you’re not alone, you haven’t lost yourself forever, and there are ways to help yourself.
The truth is that what you’re going through is likely quite common and “normal” for this phase of life. Yes, even when you feel “crazy” and like a stranger to yourself.
The good news is that this generation of peri and menopausal women are talking. Instead of suffering in silence and stigma, we’ve being vocal about this struggle.
Our symptoms run the gamut and none of us experience this in exactly the same way, but we’re helping make each other aware of all the different ways in which these hormonal changes impact our thoughts, emotions, and bodies.
In therapy, we can put your symptoms into context, understand the processes behind them, and tailor a plan so you can feel in charge again and help yourself show up the way you’d like to.
At the end of the day, I want you to know:
You are not alone. There are resources to help you understand and manage what’s happening inside you. Together, we can help you feel grounded and at home in your own body again.
What we’ll work on
Imagine a life where…
You understand what you’re experiencing and realize it’s happening for a reason.
There’s less blaming yourself and feeling defective.
You can feel normal again, even if that “normal” looks different than it did before.
You can trust in your own body again.
Change is possible.
Choose you.

Decreasing estrogen and progesterone and other hormonal changes have an impact on our entire system. Symptoms can include changes in our mental processing (brain fog), increased anxiety and/or depression, and mood swings or irritability linked to lack of good sleep. The changes in our body and physical appearance can also impact our body image and sense of self-worth. Thrown together, this is a recipe for a big reckoning with ourselves that can be tough to navigate smoothly.

Therapy can help you understand why your mood and behavior is changing the way it is and help you identify ways to manage the changes with understanding, compassion, and patience. When you better understand why this is happening, you can shift your perspective and appreciate the context around how you’re reacting.

This varies from client to client and some women are able to feel more in control again after some months while others seek support for a longer stretch of time. We’ll check in about this as we go and adjust our schedule as needed.
